Monte Rei

The first of two Jack Nicklaus signature golf courses. `Monte Rei North` has been open since June 2007. The club is set in the foothills of the Eastern Algarve with sweeping views of the Serra do Caldeirao mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South.

The layout wanders through gentle hills and valleys and has a wonderful mix of sculptured bunkers and lakes. The fairways and greens are bordered by an abundance of plants, grasses and trees enhancing the already spectacular landscape. Each hole has its own unique characteristics and offers players a truly memorable experience

The quality of the course and the service is why Monte Rei is quickly becoming known as the Eastern Algarve's 'Jewel in the Crown'.The Green Fee includes:
Golf Buggy stocked with bottled water, towels, tees, pencil and scorecard, 3D golf course guide, Monte Rei Pith Repair Tool, Access to practice facilities prior to play, Complimentary Callaway range balls, Personalised Monte Rei Souvenir nickel Bag Tag, Expansive Guest Locker Room Facilities,

12 minute tee time intervals ensure that the game is leisurely and unhurried and with each hole being totally independent of each other, you really feel like you are playing on your own! Whilst this may sound like a daunting challenge, golfers of varying ability should not be dissuaded as there are 4 different starting points to account for varying handicaps. One word of warning however, the greens are very quick with 11.5+ on the stimpmeter. Costly, but worth every penny and the added extras do give value for money.

Benamor

The Benamor course is undulating but not hilly and the natural obstacles, coupled with strategically placed bunkers and occasional water hazards, make the course a worthwhile challenge.

The views of the mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South are stunning.

The Penn A4 greens and Tees are simply superb and the fairways of Bermuda Sahara and cool-season grasses provide good lies for wood and iron shots.

Benamor is a challenging but very rewarding course suitable for players of any level, although those new to golf may find some of the course features quite difficult at first attempt.

Our Opinion: Low handicappers will be more than thrilled with the demands of the course which will test their true capabilities! A beautifully laid out course with spectacular countryside scenery. A must.

Quinta da Ria

Alongside its sister course of Cima, Quinta da Ria is situated in the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and is considered to be the most beautiful course of the Eastern Algarve Region.

Olive, Almond and Carob trees have been planted to not only enhance the spectacular terrain, but to provide natural hazards.

The course comprises two loops of 9 holes each with two par 5, five Par 4 and two Par 3 holes.

Six lakes are strategically positioned along the course and the green of hole 17 features an island where a bird sanctaury may be found.

The greens, smoothly undulating, are well protected by bunkers and are always testing.

Our Opinion: Fabulous scenery and well maintained course. A really enjoyable experience on flattish terrain. Excellent for low handicappers, challenging but not impossible for beginners. Strongly recommended.

How to Get There... On the EN125 between Tavira and Monte Gordo. Quinta da Ria is signposted from the road. Follow the sandy track for around 800m and the entrance is on the right.

Quinta da Ria

This is the sister course of Quinta da Ria, and although next door, offers a very different challenge.

Cima only provides distant glimpses of the sea and is hillier, longer and tougher, with lots of bunkers and very tricky greens.

A stream with a number of small waterfalls crosses the 4th, 5th, 6th and 13th fairways and turns into a lake on the signature 18th.

Most of the par 4's are pretty long being between 360 and 415m.As a protected area, the ambience is peaceful and inspiring and the natural beauty of the terrain has been skillfully incorporated into the course.

Our Opinion: Definitely more challenging than Ria and a buggy may be useful! Great Challenge for seasoned players, possibly a little tough for those new to the game.

Quinta do Vale

Designed by Severiano Ballesteros, Quinta do Vale Golf resort features an 18-hole championship layout including 6 of each Par 3, Par 4 and Par 5 holes.

Marvellously integrated in the landscape and with a luxurious view over the Guadiana River players will notice Seve's creativity as well as his promise: 'To please everyone no matter what their handicap is.' Numerous dogleg holes, wide fairways and obstacles enhance the course quality and its breathtaking surroundings.

The challenge awaits at Quinta do Vale Golf Resort.

Super Course living up to the promise of being suitable for everyone.

Our Opinion: A little gem and we strongly recommend it. Play in the morning and then hop over the border to Spain for Tapas in the afternoon. One word of warning...take a few backup balls, the challenging water hazards on the first 9 are difficult!

Castro Marim

This recently built course has a very special setting in the peaceful atmosphere of the Eastern Algarve, offering players beautiful views over the Atlantic Ocean, the River Guadiana and the nearby nature reserve.

The design of the so-called 'Atlantic Course' makes use of the natural undulations of the hills and is sprinkled with many ornamental lakes.

The fairways have been made with Bermuda grass, whilst the greens are made with the new Penn A$ grass.

The latest 9 hole course opened in 2008 has longer holes than its sister courses and has its own individual characteristics such as a beach of white sand and palm trees at the 6th hole.

Players can choose any combination of the 3 courses to play and whichever they are, will be rewarded with breathtaking mountain, river and sea views.

Our Opinion: Very hilly fairways - we suggest you take a buggy! This course will provide interest to the expert and the average handicap golfer but will please both. Highly Recommended.

Costa Esuri

Costa Esuri Golf Club is part of the Costa Esuri Golf Resort, located in Ayamonte, in the heart of the Spanish Algarve.

The two 18-hole courses with their privileged location on the bank of the Guadiana River, the fantastic views to Portugal and to the mouth of the river make them a worthwhile visit.

The West Course is long with over 7300 yards of American style features; very wide fairways, exquisite shaping of the greens and is more suitable for the amateur player, with an easy game designed to make the most the attractive surroundings and a well-balanced round.

The Eastern Course of a further 18 holes is also quite long at 6900 yards, has seven lakes and is integrated in the slope towards the salt marshes of the Guadiana River. It is a more strategic course than the West one.

Our Opinion: Both courses are worth a visit with the West course being better for high handicappers. The only downside for us is that the surrounding Coast Esuri village remains uncompleted and therefore somewhat spoils the overall experience. Note when booking this course that Spanish time is 1 hour ahead of Portugal.

Course Information: 36 Holes / par 72 Length 7300 / 6900 Yards Opened in 2007/8 Designed by Jose Canales.

Course Facilities: Buggy and Trolly Hire, Putting Green, Cafe / Snack Bar

How to Get There... Take the A22 from Portugal to Spain. Take the Ayamonte turn off and then take the 3rd exit off the roundabout signposted Costa Esuri urbanization. Continue on this road for around 2 kms and follow the signs for the golf.
